Amigos de las Aves is a Costa Rican non profit organization dedicated to the
conservation of the two endangered species of macaws found in Costa Rica, the
Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao) and the Great Green or Buffon’s Macaw (Ara ambigua).
Amigos de las Aves incorporates breeding techniques, aviary management,
environmental and key studies and conservation issues, in order to carry out
controlled release programs in conjunction with MINAE (Ministry of the
Environment and Energy) and Costa Rican laws. Situated in the Central Valley,
the Breeding Centre and Homebase of Flor de Mayo is a licensed zoological park
and also works as a Refuge for confiscated birds.
There are two types of volunteer opportunities at Amigos de las Aves, working at
the breeding center or at a release site. Volunteers at the breeding center will
be kept busy feeding birds, mantaining aviaries, making toys, observing
behaviors and other related tasks. Workers at a release site will observe the
birds, their feeding station, and any nesting behaviors and perform any other
tasks related to mantaining the release site.
Volunteering can be so very rewarding - an amazing opportunity to study, observe
wildlife, see a beautiful country, learn new skills, to meet new people, learn a
different language, enjoy a new culture, leave a perminant legacy with your hard
work, a chance to make a difference. |
