Medical Volunteers Provide Basic Care and Cleft
Palate Surgeries at Casa Guatemala
For children born in poverty often in rural areas, medical care is rarely
available. If a child suffers from a birth defect such as a cleft palate, not
only are they are forced to deal with issues breathing and speaking, but also
with the rejection and shame from society.
Fortunately a team of Surgeons, Anesthesiologists, Pediatricians, and Nurses
from the Along with the Cleft Palate Surgery Project, doctors and nurses from
Somalia , India , Pakistan , and the United States are currently volunteering
their time and knowledge to give each child an examination at Casa Guatemala .
With a current total of 250 abused and abandoned children, this is no small
task.
Casa Guatemala is an outstanding example of a charitable organization that
exercises fiscal responsibility and works diligently to be as self sufficient as
possible. They operate a hostel for travelers, small farming and livestock
operations, along with a retail shop that sells excess agriculture and livestock
products (when available). Casa Guatemala also employs local villagers to teach,
cook, and maintain the projects resources providing valuable job opportunities
for the local population.
