Nicholas Abibu Koku Victus founded the Hohoe Christian Orphans’ Home in 2003
with a mission to provide neglected children with care, love, education, and
employable skills. HCOH currently schools 80+ children from ages 3 to 14. This
only covers a small number of the 6,000 identified children in need in the Hohoe
District that work as child laborers.
The Orphanage has 3 qualified teachers. Volunteers are asked to assist in and
out of the classroom to educate the children in English and teach them life
skills. Because these children are behind educationally, the volunteer
assistants are crucial to ensuring that they receive individualized attention.
While volunteering in Ghana, volunteers have the opportunity to tour the local
region and visit land marks such as the Wli Waterfall. HCOH can house up to 6
volunteers at any given time, and offers showers, flush toilets and electricity.
A fee of $150/week is required to cover housing, food, and to assist with
project funding.
Hohoe is located in the Volta Region of Ghana, which is somewhat in-land,
situated between Lake Volta, the world’s largest artificial lake, and Togo. The
climate is generally tropical, warm and humid. |
